Semiotics is the study of the processes of signs, which is any form of
activity, behavior, or any process that involves signs, including the
production of meaning. A sign is everything that communicates a meaning, which
is not the sign itself, to the interpreter of the sign.
To study this, semiotics is divided into three main branches: semantics,
pragmatics, and syntactics. Among its antecedents is Saussure's theory of
signs, which is also known as semiology.
